Ex Collection Family of Prince von Hohenzollern, Castle Sigmaringen, MunchiKing Ludwig III of Bavaria Sotheby's, London, Aus Deutschen Schlössern - Ancestral Attics, October 14, 2000 www.Sothebys.com Acquired from the above Friedrich Wasmann was born in Hamburg and began his artistic training with the painter Christoph Suhr before studying at the academies in Dresden and Munich. In 1830, he traveled to Merano in South Tyrol, followed by an extended stay in Rome from 1832 to 1835, where he became associated with Friedrich Overbeck and the Nazarene circle and converted to Catholicism. After periods in Munich, Merano, and Bolzano, where he developed a successful career as a portraitist, Wasmann returned to Hamburg from 1843 to 1846 and married Emilie Krämer. The couple subsequently settled permanently in Merano, where he remained until his death in 1886. His autobiography, Ein deutsches Künstlerleben, was published posthumously in 1896. The Hamburger Kunsthalle holds an especially significant collection of nearly 1,000 works by Wasmann, and his work was prominently rediscovered through the influential German Centennial Exhibition of 1906. New stretchers; drying crackle and minor stable craquelure to surface.
