In 1830, he traveled to Merano in South Tyrol, followed by an extended stay in Rome from 1832 to 1835, where he became associated with Friedrich Overbeck and the Nazarene circle and converted to Catholicism. After periods in Munich, Merano, and Bolzano, where he developed a successful career as a portraitist, Wasmann returned to Hamburg from 1843 to 1846 and married Emilie Krämer. The couple subsequently settled permanently in Merano, where he remained until his death in 1886. His autobiography, Ein deutsches Künstlerleben, was published posthumously in 1896. The Hamburger Kunsthalle holds an especially significant collection of nearly 1,000 works by Wasmann, and his work was prominently rediscovered through the influential German Centennial Exhibition of 1906.
