Gaetano Mormile (1839-1890) - Suonatrice di tamburello

Watercolor on paper depicting Popolana, signed bottom right with G. Mormile. It is presented in fair conservational condition, with a patina and light signs of aging. Under a wood lamp, small restorations emerge. Gaetano Mormile was a renowned artist of the Neapolitan school in the 19th century. He became famous for his genre scenes with folkloric taste, markets, and portraits of townspeople or peasants in traditional dress. The work bears a clearly legible autograph signature at the bottom right, initialed as "G. Mormile". It depicts a smiling girl seated on a rush-seated chair while holding a large tambourine in her hands, adorned with rich southern traditional costumes, conspicuous hoop earrings, and necklaces of pearls and coral. This specific strand linked to popular musicians and players of traditional instruments (such as tambourines, mandolins, and guitars) was one of the themes most loved and reproduced by the painter within his workshop in Naples.
