GARRY NAMPONAN Wik-Alkan/Wik-Ngathan/Wik-Mungkan languages, born 1960 Ku' (Camp Dog), 2011 natural pigments and acrylic binder on carved milkwood 26h x 62w x 10d cm PROVENANCE Wik & Kugu Arts and Craft Centre, Queensland Pandanas Gallery, Queensland, Cat No. PGAK035 Private Collection, Victoria Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Wik & Kugu Arts and Craft Centre Garry Namponan is a leading sculptor working through Wik & Kugu Arts Centre in Aurukun, on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula. Over more than two decades, Namponan has become particularly celebrated for his Ku' (Camp Dog) sculptures, part of a distinctive carving tradition that has become synonymous with contemporary art from Aurukun. Namponan belongs to the Apalech ceremonial group, and Ku' holds particular significance within this cultural inheritance. The Story Place of Ku' is located at Eeremangk, near the mouth of the Knox River in the south of the Wik and Kugu region. The ancestral story tells of Ku' travelling to Cape York Peninsula before leaving the land and entering the river, where he transforms into Nyiingkuchen, the Freshwater Shark. Moving between land and water, the story connects Country, ancestral beings and language, with Ku' understood as having given language to the region. Carved from milkwood and brought to life through ochre and painted markings, Namponan's Ku' are also highly individual characters. Each dog has its own name, colouring, stance and personality, capturing something of the familiar camp dogs that remain an everyday presence in Aurukun while carrying a much deeper ancestral resonance. © GARRY NAMPONAN / Copyright Agency, 2026
