Gavard charles - Galeries historiques de Versailles - 1838

14 engravings of Grands Amiraux-Guerriers from Series IX Section II Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme, known as the Grand Vendôme, was born at the Hôtel de Vendôme in Paris on July 1, 1654, and died in the town of Vinaròs on June 11, 1712. He is a descendant of Henry IV through the legitimized bastard line of Bourbon-Vendôme. He held the titles of Duke of Vendôme, Duke of Mercœur, Duke of Étampes, Duke of Beaufort, Duke of Penthièvre, and Count of Dreux, Prince of Anet and Martigues. He was one of the most important and controversial generals at the end of Louis XIV’s reign, notable during the League of Augsburg and the War of the Spanish Succession. An openly homosexual man, he died without issue, and his duchy died with him. His military exploits earned him the nickname Grand Vendôme. François de Bourbon-Vendôme, 2nd Duke of Beaufort, known as “the King of the Halls” (1665), born January 16, 1616 at the Château de Coucy and died June 25, 1669 during the siege of Candia, was a French nobleman and military leader of the 17th century, a member of the powerful House of Vendôme, descended from King Henry IV and his mistress Gabrielle d’Estrées. Marceau (Joseph-Maurice) b: Aubert du Bayet (Jean-Baptiste Annibal) Portraits of Joseph-Maurice Marceau, commander-in-chief, and of Jean-Baptiste-Annal Aubert du Bayet, commander-in-chief. Jean Baptiste Annibal Aubert du Bayet or Aubert-Dubayet, born August 19, 1757 in La Mobile, then part of Louisiana (now in Alabama) or in Baton Rouge, and died December 17, 1797 in Constantinople, was a French politician and general of the French Revolution. Pierre d’Aubusson, born in 1423 at the Château du Monteil (now Le Monteil-au-Vicomte in the Creuse), died in 1503 in Rhodes, was the 40th Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, a cardinal and papal legate in Asia. He was nicknamed the “shield of Christendom.” Philippe de Villiers de L’Isle-Adam (born in Beauvais in 1464 and died in Malta on August 21, 1534) was the 44th Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Henri de Lorraine, 3rd Duke of Guise and 2nd Prince of Joinville, known as “the Scarred One,” born December 31, 1550 in Joinville (Haute-Marne) and murdered on December 23, 1588 in Blois (Loir-et-Cher), was a prince from a cadet branch of the House of Lorraine. Leading a powerful network of nobles, he became popular during the Wars of Religion by presenting himself as the defender of the Catholic faith. After participating in the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre (1572), he distinguished himself on several battlefields by fighting Protestants. Prince of Joinville, then Duke of Guise (1563), he held an important position at court as Grand Master and peer of France. Jean I d’Estrées, lord of Estrées, of Valieu (Wailly), of Cœuvres (perhaps the first marquis), of Viérey, Count of Orbec, Baron of Doudeauville [Which?], Viscount of Soissons, born in 1486 at Cœuvres where he died after October 23, 1571, was a French aristocrat and military man. Charles (II) de Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne, born March 26, 1554 in Alençon and died October 3, 1611 in Soissons, was a French nobleman of the House of Guise and a military leader of the League during the Wars of Religion. He was the younger brother of Duke Henri de Guise. A captain in the wars of religion, he participated in several campaigns under the reign of Henry III. Governor of Burgundy, he held the honorific office of Grand Chamberlain at the French court. After the assassination of his brothers in 1588, he led the League, but after several defeats (Arques, Ivry, Fontaine-Française), he submitted to King Henry IV in 1595. Gaspard de Coligny was a French noble and admiral, born February 16, 1519 in Châtillon-sur-Loing (today Châtillon-Coligny) and died August 24, 1572 in Paris, murdered during the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. Count of Coligny, Baron of Beaupont and Beauvoir, Montjuif, Roissiat, Chevignat and other places, lord of Châtillon, Admiral of France, he is one of the best-known members of the House of Coligny, which became extinct in 1694. He was the son of Gaspard I de Coligny, Marshal of France under Francis I, and his wife Louise de Montmorency. He was the brother of Odet, Cardinal of Châtillon, and François d’Andelot. Guilleaume II Gouffier, lord of Bonnivet, born circa 1481 and died February 24, 1525 at the Battle of Pavia, was Admiral of France and Governor of Dauphiné. He was one of the principal counselors to Francis I from his accession in 1515, after having for several years been part of the circle of the prince’s companions, whose elder brother Artus was his tutor. Philippe Chabot (born 1492 – 15 June 1543), called the Admiral of Brion, Admiral of France, lord of Brion and d’Aspremont, Count of Charny, and (through his wife) Count of Buzançais, was Governor of Burgundy, Lieutenant general of the Governor of Normandy, then chief minister of François I in 1535. He fell into disgrace in 1538 and was rehabilitated in 1541. Jean Bart, in Flemish Jan Bart [Note 1] or Jan Baert, born October 21, 1650 in Dunkirk (County of Flanders) and died April 27, 1702 in the same city (French Flanders), is a famous privateer for his exploits in service of France during the wars of Louis XIV. René Trouin, sieur du Gué, called Duguay-Trouin, born June 10, 1673 in Saint-Malo and died September 27, 1736 in Paris, was a French privateer and admiral. Born into a family of Saint-Malo shipowners, he began his career in 1689 and, as early as 1691, was given command of a ship. His courage, the respect he earned from his men, and his victories against the English and the Dutch during the last two wars of Louis XIV ensured his rapid rise through the naval hierarchy. The Galeries historiques de Versailles is a monumental work gathering more than 1,750 plates. The entire Galeries historiques de Versailles was published by subscription in 460 installments (462 according to Vicaire), the first announced on May 1, 1837. Three editions were available at the time: a luxury edition, in a grand folio format with engravings on chinoise, with text decorated with vignettes, tailpieces, and wood-engraved ornaments; a small folio edition, with the same engravings and texts but without the ornaments; and an in-4 edition containing a selection of engravings from the other editions.
