14 engravings by Maréchaux de France from the Series IX - Grand Admirals - Constables - Famous warriors Henri II de Montmorency, born April 30, 1595 at the Chantilly château and died in Toulouse on October 30, 1632, was a gentleman contemporary of Louis XIII. Admiral of France, viceroy of New France and governor of Languedoc, he took part in the wars against the Protestants and defeated the fleet of Benjamin de Rohan, lord of Soubise, before La Rochelle in 1625. Marshal of France in 1630, he plotted with Gaston d'Orléans, brother of the king, against Cardinal Richelieu. Condemned to death for lèse-majesté, he was executed in Toulouse on October 30, 1632. Louis I of Bourbon, Prince of Condé, Duke of Enghien, born in Vendôme on May 7, 1530 and died in Jarnac on March 13, 1569, was a prince of the blood of the House of Bourbon-Vendôme, founder of the cadet branch Bourbon-Condé and the main Protestant leader during the first three Wars of Religion. He died assassinated on the field of the Battle of Jarnac. He is the founder of the House of Condé and converted to the Reformed religion in 1558. John I of Burgundy, called “John the Fearless,” born May 28, 1371 in Dijon and murdered September 10, 1419 at Montereau, was a prince of the Capetian House of Valois. Louis I of Orléans, born March 13, 1372 in Paris and murdered November 23, 1407 in the same city, son of King Charles V (1338–1380) and younger brother of Charles VI (1368–1422), was a prince of the Capetian House of Valois, Duke of Orléans from 1392 to 1407. Founder of the second House of Orléans, Louis d’Orléans was the father of the duke and poet Charles d’Orléans, the grandfather of Louis XII and the great-grandfather of François I. Louis of Luxembourg, known in history as the Constable of Saint-Pol[1], born in 1418 and died in Paris on December 19, 1475, was one of the most influential members of the French high nobility, both vassal of the King of France and of the Duke of Burgundy. He was made constable by Louis XI but was condemned to death and executed for high treason in the Place de Grève. Gaston of Foix, born December 10, 1489 in Mazères and died April 11, 1512 in Ravenna, was Duke of Nemours, Count of Étampes and Viscount of Narbonne. He was the general of the armies of his uncle King Louis XII in his army in Italy. Pierre Terrail, Seigneur de Bayard, better known as Bayard or Chevalier Bayard[5], born in 1473 or 1474[6] at the Château Bayard (in Pontcharra), and died on April 30, 1524 at Romagnano Sesia[1],[2] or Rovasenda[3],[4] (in Piedmont, Italy), is a French noble who notably distinguished himself as a knight during the Italian Wars (15th and 16th centuries). The Galeries historiques de Versailles is a monumental work gathering more than 1750 plates. The entire Galeries historiques de Versailles was published by subscription in 460 installments (462 according to Vicaire), the first of which was announced on May 1, 1837.
