George Wilhelm Opdenhoff (1807-1873) - Marine: In de Havenmonding (No Reserve)

Artist: George Wilhelm Opdenhoff (1807–1873) Title: Marine: In the harbor mouth Medium and support: watercolor on paper Dimensions: 16 × 21 cm; with frame 30.5 × 36 cm Signature: hand-signed bottom left George Wilhelm Opdenhoff was born in Fulda and died in The Hague. He was a Dutch marine painter of German origin, active in the nineteenth century. From around 1842 he lived in The Hague. His oeuvre mainly comprises seascapes, beach scenes, and river views. Object description The scene shows sailing vessels at a harbor mouth. To the left of center lie ships with light and brown sails, with two figures on board and a Dutch flag aloft on the highest mast. To the right there are wooden revetments, piles, and a low building with a slanted roof. In the foreground, two figures walk through shallow water; the left figure carries a basket on the back. A smaller sailing vessel is depicted on the horizon to the left. A broad, cloudy sky occupies most of the pictorial space. The signature is located bottom left, near the foreground posts. Technical and material analysis The watercolor is built up from transparent washes on paper. Broad, softly blended areas form the sky and the water. Finer lines and locally darker brushstrokes articulate masts, rigging, hulls, figures, and revetments. Horizontal strokes indicate reflections in the water. Light passages in the sails and clouds contrast with the more strongly defined brown and gray areas. Composition and form analysis The horizon is low, giving the sky dominant prominence. The ships form the central motif; masts and slanted sail edges break the horizontal order of water and shore. The figures on the right and the posts on the left frame the foreground. Overlaps and the smaller ship on the horizon enhance the sense of depth. The color palette mainly comprises light blue, gray, and brown, with a small red accent in the flag. Stylistic and art-historical context The work belongs to Romantic marine art. The combination of an extensively depicted sailing motif, figures on the water’s edge, and a vast cloudscape aligns with this nineteenth-century visual tradition. The atmospheric color washes are paired with a linear rendering of ships and harbor structures. Comparable artists Johannes Christiaan Schotel, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, Hermanus Koekkoek, Clarkson Stanfield, Johan Christian Dahl Condition The paper shows light foxing and discoloration. Small brown spots are scattered, including in the sky area. The discoloration affects the lighter parts of the image. Conclusion Marine: In the harbor mouth is a signed watercolor on paper within nineteenth-century Romantic marine art. A more precise dating has not been established. The material condition is characterized by light foxing and paper discoloration.
