The work depicts a fishing sailboat at anchor, accompanied by a small boat in the foreground, in a peaceful maritime atmosphere. The composition shows remarkable mastery of painterly material. Lapchine here deploys a vigorous and generous brushstroke, characterized by bold impastos and a relief work particularly evident in the sails, the hull of the boat and the reflections on the water surface. The delicate tones of pink, pearl gray and blue of the sky harmoniously contrast with deep greens, browns and reddish accents of the boats. The almost sculptural treatment of the painting gives this composition a particularly lively presence, while the play of light and reflections expresses a great atmospheric sensitivity. This marine painting constitutes a fine example of Lapchine’s figurative painting, combining a post-impressionist sensibility with a personal, generous and expressive handling. The work is presented in an elegant molded gilded frame, which underscores its chromatic qualities. Condition Good overall presentation condition. The surface shows a very pronounced pictorial relief, characteristic of the technique used, as well as craquelure visible in places. The frame shows some signs of age and use. Work sold with its frame.
