German school (XX) - Winters stadstafereel (Düsseldorf)

A beautiful and atmospheric winter cityscape in a park. Bare trees frame a light, classical building, and figures in clothing from around 1900 walk along the snow-covered path, some under an umbrella, past a gas lamp. The palette is restrained, with silver-gray, ochre and pink, and a fine play of light in the sky. The paint is loose and paste-like laid on, with many visible brushstrokes in the snow. Features Technique: oil on canvas, on stretcher Canvas size: 40 x 50 cm Size with frame: 54 x 64 cm Signed lower left "W. H…n. Df.". The reading is uncertain; "Df." presumably stands for Düsseldorf. Frame: gilded wooden frame with linen inner frame Provenance (verso labels) "Eigentum der Breidenbacher Hof GmbH 1877" (Breidenbacher Hof is a hotel in Düsseldorf) "Frans & Kapma Collectie – Kring van Dorth" Handwritten label with the title "Winters stadstafereel (Düsseldorf)" Signature The handwritten label reads the signature as "W. Hüliam" and mentions 38 x 48 cm. Both seem incorrect: the canvas measures 40 x 50 cm, and the signature is not unambiguously legible. We compared the signature with documented artists in, among others, the list of the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and the MAGEDA database, but could not reliably link it to a name. The work is therefore offered without attribution. Condition The canvas is in excellent condition. The frame has light signs of use. See the photos.
