Germany, Hamburg 200.000 Mark 1923 - NGC MS66

GERMANY. Hamburg. 200,000 Marks. 1923. - Value: 200,000 Marks. - Year: 1923. - Inscriptions: Obverse: FREIE UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG. Reverse: NOTGELD · 200000 MARK · 1. AUGUST 1923. - Grade: MS66 (NGC). Coin of 200,000 Marks issued as Notgeld by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg during the German hyperinflation of 1923. The obverse features the coat of arms of Hamburg, supported by two rampant lions and crowned, surrounded by the city’s official legend, in a heraldic design of great sobriety and balance. The reverse shows the denomination of 200,000 Marks in the center, accompanied by the inscription Notgeld and the issue date, August 1, 1923, reflecting the dizzying rise in face values characteristic of that period. The specimen preserves an exceptional state of preservation, with fully defined reliefs, satin surfaces and original shine virtually intact, qualities fully in line with the MS66 grading given by NGC. These emergency issues constitute an important historical testament to the monetary crisis that affected Germany after World War I, when numerous cities and local authorities resorted to Notgeld to maintain monetary circulation during the hyperinflation.
