Gerolamo Induno (1827-1890)

Gerolamo Induno (1827-1890)

An enchanting and deeply evocative European genre painting of the 19th century depicting a young weaver asleep in her armchair, with her hand gently resting near the spinning wheel. The composition is rich with an intimate and romantic narrative: the scene is softly lit by the warm, pale glow of a lit fireplace in the background, which highlights a small boiling pot and a candle on the shelf. The young woman is elegantly dressed in period 18th-century attire, testifying to the artist's preference for scenes in historical costume. The brushwork is refined and captures the delicate textures of the interior and the serene expression of the sleeping girl. Framed in a magnificent and substantial contemporaneous antique frame with splendid geometric engravings and rich gold leaf, this work represents a precious investment for high-end antiquarian collections and sophisticated traditional interiors. Artist: European School / Unidentified Master of genre scenes (19th century). Technique: Oil on canvas. Period: 19th century (approximately 1840–1880). Frame: Magnificent and substantial antique wooden frame with precious guilloché carvings and gold leaf finish, presenting an extraordinary authentic patina. Conditions: Very Good/Good (The painting surface is stable, with a beautiful and natural age crackle. A very slight and normal superficial abrasion is visible in the lower right corner near the edge, entirely normal for its age and easily concealed by the frame’s sightline. The antique frame is in excellent structural condition with a magnificent patina). Technique: Fine academic oil painting with smooth transitions and atmospheric chiaroscuro. Era: 19th century / 1840–1880. Color: warm earth tones, terracotta reds, soft creamy whites, and rich antique gold from the frame. Aesthetic context and attribution: This captivating composition shows strong stylistic affinities with the Italian school of 19th-century genre painting, particularly with the prestigious Milanese circle of Domenico and Gerolamo Induno. The subject choice – the intimacy of domestic work surrendering to sleep – combined with the warm and suggestive chiaroscuro created by the fireplace in the background, perfectly reflects European Romantic Realism of the mid-1800s and nostalgic period scenes. (not present or hidden under the frame profile). Dimensions: painting 46.5 cm x 37.5 cm. The lot will be properly packed and shipped with contracted couriers and online tracking. For this lot, shipments outside the European Community are not made.
