Stamperia 2RC – Rome (dry stamp in the lower left corner). cm. 40 × 40. Giò Pomodoro (1930-2002) was an Italian sculptor, goldsmith, engraver and stage designer. He is regarded as one of the most important abstract sculptors on the international scene of the 20th century. He was the younger brother of sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro. Already from 1955, he began to exhibit his works in Florence at the gallery Numero of Fiamma Vigo, then at the Montenapoleone Gallery and at the Naviglio Gallery in Milan, at the Cavallino Gallery in Venice and at the Obelisk Gallery in Rome. He collaborated with the magazine Il Gesto and, together with his brother Arnaldo and with artists such as Piero Dorazio, Gastone Novelli, Giulio Turcato, Tancredi Parmeggiani, Achille Perilli and Lucio Fontana, presented works at the Continuità group exhibitions, which also involved critics Guido Ballo, Giulio Carlo Argan, and Franco Russoli. He was invited to the 28th Venice Biennale in 1956 where he exhibited Argenti fusi su osso di seppia, dedicated to the poet Ezra Pound. In 1959 he was also invited to documenta 2 in Kassel, Germany, where he exhibited Fluidità contrapposta and in the same year he participated in the Biennale of young artists in Paris with Superfici in tensione, winning the sculpture prize together with Anthony Caro. In 1961 he held two solo exhibitions at the Galerie Internationale in Paris and at the Blu Gallery in Milan. He was invited for the second time to the 31st Venice Biennale in 1962. From 1965 he dedicated himself to Radiali (Radial) and Quadrati (Squares) works. Between 1966 and 1967 he stayed twice in the United States to present some of his works at the Marlborough Gallery and at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York.
