GIUSEPPE BERNARDINO BISON (ITALIAN 1762-1844) VIEW OF THE ARSENALE, VENICE Gouache 14 x 19cm (5½ x 7¼in.) Provenance: A French Noble Family Jean-Luc Baroni Ltd, London, where acquired by the present owner The collection of The Honorable C. Boyden Gray Exhibited: London, Jean-Luc Baroni Ltd, Giuseppe Bernardino Bison: Views and Capricci in Oil and Gouache from Private Collections, 2013, no. 3 This fine gouache by Giuseppe Bernardino Bison is taken from the same viewpoint as that by Luca Carlevarijs and Michele Marieschi for their earlier engravings of 1703 and 1741 respectively (see Lot. 113), works that in turn inspired Francesco Guardi’s early oil of the Arsenale, in the National Gallery, London (1755-60). A fortified shipyard and armoury, the Arsenale had served as a symbol of Venice’s domination of the Mediterranean sea trade since the twelfth century. Standing guard beside the Arsenale’s main gateway, the three metre-high white marble Piraeus Lion, symbol of Saint Mark, Venice’s patron saint, looks down on various groups of figures gathered in the campo. The present work can be compared with another gouache of this view by Bison, sold at Sotheby’s, New York, 31 January 2013, lot 83, for $42,500.
