Glamorous Jarretière Bracelet Made of Pearls & Diamonds, ca. 1965

Jarretière bracelets first found their way into jewellery fashion in the mid-19th century. Although the name means "garter" in French, the characteristic clasps of these jewellery pieces are often more reminiscent of belt clasps. In Victorian times, designs with belt clasps were also popular gifts of friendship or love - because as tightly as the belt was closed, so should be the connection. Then a century later, jarrètiere bracelets experienced a second wave of popularity. Starting in the 1940s, soft, flowing jarrètiere bracelets emerged, often made of gold in a "honeycomb" pattern, set with rubies and diamonds. Our example, as elegant as it is luxurious, is also a midcentury Jarretière bracelet. Fine, full-round cultured pearls ranging in tone from light gray to light rose, with a shimmering luster, make up the bracelet itself. Small diamonds are set in diamond settings between the pearls, creating a subtle honeycomb pattern. The white gold clasp is set with diamonds and baguette diamonds and is designed to be slightly three-dimensional. It is this three-dimensionality, as well as the combination of diamond cuts and the rich use of cultured pearls, that identify the bracelet as a piece of 1960s jewellery. The special design of the bracelet was only made possible by the invention of the cultured pearl, which was so instrumental in shaping the glamorous jewellery of the midcentury. It was not until the early 20th century that the cultured pearl had begun its triumphant advance; before then, each pearl had to be wrested individually from the ocean. For a pearl necklace of evenly matched pearls often had to be collected for a long time. When the cultured pearl made full-round pearls and better matching possible, jewellery designers knew no stopping. Numerous variations of luxurious pearl jewellery were created that had not been possible before. A jewel that beautifully combines the long tradition of the Jarretière bracelet with the fashion innovations of its time.
