Graceful Vintage Gold Cameo Ring, ca. 1955

We associate cameo ornaments mainly with the 19th century and the style epochs of classicism and historicism. However, the carved representations enjoyed great popularity even beyond that. The present yellow gold ring is a fine example of the continuing popularity of cameos to this day. The ring presents an oval profile portrait of carved shell in its center. The cameo depicts a lady whose luxuriantly curled hair is held together by a ribbon. The cameo was probably cut in the Bay of Naples, where small artisan workshops still cut cameos based on various models. A playful setting including a ring band made of warmly shining yellow gold makes the cameo wearable. This well-preserved piece of jewellery was probably created in the early post-war period. We date the ring to the 1950s due to its workmanship and strong design language.
