This beautiful, fully hand-carved sculpture depicts Guanyin, the Buddhist Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion and Grace. The statue was crafted in the late twentieth century, presumably between 1970 and 1990, in a specialized woodcarving workshop in Southeast Asia, with Indonesia the most likely origin. The object is made from a single solid block of suar wood, also known as Asian rainbow wood. This high-quality hardwood is clearly recognizable by its warm, light-brown hue and the characteristic open grain structure with fine dark pores and streaks. On the underside of the base, authentic rough tool marks from the traditional artisanal carving process attest to its craftsmanship. The figurative composition exhibits a high degree of refinement and dynamism, aided by the elegantly layered mantle and the flowing, fully open sash at the side that suggests movement. Guanyin is depicted standing serenely on a detailed carved base of lotus petals, with the toes of both feet subtly visible beneath the robes. In her left hand she holds the traditional sacred vase with pure water, symbolizing spiritual peace and the alleviation of human suffering. Her right hand is raised in a blessing Karana Mudra, a spiritual gesture intended to ward off negativity. The facial expression shows a meditative gaze with softly closed eyes, a subtle smile, and an urna on the forehead, while the finely incised hair converges into a high ushnisha. The sculpture is in absolute pristine condition and shows no restorations or flaws. It is precisely the most delicate elements of the woodcarving, including the ultra-thin, elegantly carved fingers and the freestanding wooden ribbons on the side, that have remained completely intact over the years. With its slender proportions, a height of 47.7 centimeters, a width of 21 centimeters and a depth of 14 centimeters, this sculpture forms a monumental decorative object.
