Ground Floor — PENDE — A carved wooden mask with a dark brown patina; the face has highly stylized features, marked by scarification on the cheeks and forehead. The eyes are elongated, and the slightly parted mouth reveals the teeth. A prominent headdress made of braided plant fibers forms several tall, conical points, complemented by a textile collar. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pende people, first half of the 20th century. Beautiful patina from use. Damage and missing sections in the headdress due to age and wear.
