1. J. Geiler of Kaisersberg. Postil: On the fiery Evangelia through the year, together with the Quadragesimal, and on several saints. Strasbourg, J. Schott, 1522. 3 woodcuts on one sheet verso (approx. 8.2:10.7 cm) by Hans Wechtlin Literature: VD 16, G 788. From the first edition of this collection of Geiler’s German sermons. With the beautiful woodcuts by Wechtlin illustrating the life of Jesus. Johannes Wechtlin or Johann Ulrich Wechtlin (born ca. 1485 in Strasbourg; date of death unknown) was a German painter and wood-engraver. Wechtlin became a citizen of Strasbourg in 1514 and was active there until about 1520. None of his paintings has survived. His artistic importance lies in chiaroscuro or color woodcuts, a technique he developed more fully in Germany. His style was influenced by Albrecht Dürer and Hans Baldung. The master sometimes signed his works with two crossed rods accompanied by the initials “Io. V.” 2, mounted on the recto, 8 fine pieces (of which 6 are hand-colored woodcuts (ca. 6.2 x 8.8 cm) by Vergil Solis from a Bible of the 16th century. Old Testament motifs. Virgil Solis, also Virgilius Solis (born 1514 in Nuremberg; died 1 August 1562 in the same place) was a very prolific German designer, woodcutter, and copper engraver.
