HAP Grieshaber (1909–1981) was a significant German painter and printmaker of the 20th century, known for his powerful woodcuts and his socially critical works. Born as Helmut Andreas Paul Grieshaber in Rot am Rhein, he initially studied typography before turning to visual art. Grieshaber’s works are often marked by expressionist influences and reflect his political and social beliefs, including themes of freedom, peace, and justice. In the 1950s and 1960s he gained international recognition for his woodcuts, which impressed with their expressive formal language and humanistic message. Grieshaber was also a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and influenced numerous young artists. His works are represented in important collections and museums worldwide. Grieshaber passionately opposed oppression and fought for the rights of artists, which secured him a firm place in the history of political art. To this day, HAP Grieshaber remains a central figure in postwar German art.
