- Henri Matisse (after), two serigraphic posters on heavyweight smooth paper (approx. 300gsm, refers to paper thickness/density). - Signed in the plate. - Stamp on verso. - 1994. Copyright Succession Matisse by SIAE. - Ready to frame. The pic in which the items appears framed is a simulated recreation for illustrative purposes only, the frames and other decorative elements shown in it are not included in the lot you are bidding on. - Condition: very good. Never framed, never exposed. - Size of each: 70 x 100cm. - Henri Matisse’s Nu Bleu I and Nu Bleu II (1952) belong to the celebrated Blue Nudes series, one of the defining achievements of the artist’s final years and a radical synthesis of drawing, colour and sculpture through his papiers découpés, or cut-paper technique. Created when physical limitations increasingly prevented Matisse from painting at an easel, these compositions emerged from sheets of paper painted in intense blue gouache, which he cut directly with scissors and arranged into simplified female figures. In both works, the body is transformed into an interlocking rhythm of curves, limbs and negative white spaces, reducing the seated nude to its essential silhouette while retaining a remarkable sense of volume and movement. The concentrated ultramarine blue recalls the Mediterranean light and colour that fascinated Matisse throughout his career, while the sculptural poses reflect his longstanding exploration of the female figure and his interest in African and non-Western art. Their extraordinary economy of form places the Blue Nudes at a crucial point between Fauvism, modernist abstraction and the increasingly direct visual language that would influence generations of artists, from Ellsworth Kelly and Alexander Calder to later Pop and contemporary art. With their combination of brilliant blue and luminous white, Nu Bleu I and Nu Bleu II have exceptional decorative impact when displayed as a coordinated pair. Their clean vertical compositions work beautifully in Mid-Century Modern, Bauhaus-inspired, Mediterranean, Scandinavian, Japandi, minimalist and sophisticated contemporary interiors, particularly against warm cream, sand, pale grey, taupe, terracotta, muted green or deeper navy walls. They combine naturally with oak, walnut, travertine, marble, linen, bouclé, brass and ceramics, alongside furniture associated with Eames, Le Corbusier, Gio Ponti, Arne Jacobsen and Scandinavian design. Matching black, natural wood or restrained gilt frames can emphasise either their graphic modernity or their museum-like character. Ideal for a living room, bedroom, study, entrance hall or large gallery wall, the pair also makes a distinctive gift for admirers of Henri Matisse, modern art, figurative abstraction, interior design and iconic twentieth-century imagery. For admirers of Matisse, Fauvism and collectible modern art, Nu Bleu I and Nu Bleu II embody the extraordinary creative renewal of an artist who transformed the simple act of cutting coloured paper into a new form of drawing. Their appeal connects naturally with Picasso, Braque, Léger, Miró, Kandinsky, Klee, Chagall, Calder and Jean Arp, as well as Warhol, Hockney, Basquiat, Keith Haring, Banksy, Shepard Fairey and Lagasse. Their unmistakable graphic character also integrates naturally into collections combining modern art, vintage posters, photography, art and design books and luxury culture, from Cartier, Rolex and Patek Philippe to Chanel, Dior, Hermès and Gucci, alongside Lego, Star Wars, Pokémon and other sought-after collectibles. Elegant, sensual and immediately recognisable, the two Blue Nudes capture Matisse’s remarkable ability to achieve maximum expressive power through the simplest elements of colour, line and form.
