He arrived in England in 1912 after eight years in Montparnasse, and in 1913 he received a commission for twenty-four watercolors intended to illustrate a volume of old tales, In Powder and Crinoline. The following year, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, a collection of fifteen Norwegian tales, appeared. It was not until 1924 that Hodder & Stoughton published Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales begun in 1912. The last book, Hänsel and Gretel, illustrated with twelve watercolors, was published in 1925.
