Herman van der Weele (1852-1930) - Schaapskooi

Herman van der Weele (1852-1930) - Schaapskooi

This atmospheric landscape painting shows a rural scene with a winding sandy path, a characteristic farm, and a group of tall trees that silhouette against a cloudy sky. The artist has used a restrained color palette with warm brown- and green-toned hues, alternated with soft gray- and yellow-toned tones in the sky. The dark clusters of trees form a strong contrast with the light sky and give the composition a distinctive sense of depth. The winding path leads the viewer's gaze into the landscape, while the loose, painterly brushwork contributes to the natural appearance of the work. The subtle light and the ominous clouds create a somewhat melancholic, yet tranquil atmosphere. The painting breathes the quietness and simplicity of rural life and reflects a sensitive approach to the Dutch landscape. Executed in oil on panel, approximately 34 × 24 cm; with frame approximately 49 × 39 × 4 cm. Provenance: private collection, F. de V., Eindhoven. Biography of the artist Herman Johannes van der Weele (1852–1930) was a Dutch painter and draftsman who became best known for landscapes and depictions of rural life. Working horses, farmers, flocks of sheep and sandy soils are among his characteristic subjects. He is counted among the artists around the Hague School, where his painting is characterized by a predominantly tonal palette, a loose brushwork, and a strong attention to light and atmosphere. Van der Weele was friends with and artistically connected to several artists from the Hague milieu; Vincent van Gogh also knew his work and mentioned him in his correspondence. In addition to his own artistry, Van der Weele was a teacher of importance: among others Willem Witjens belonged to his pupils. His agricultural depictions form a recognizable and extensive part of his oeuvre.
