About the artist: Hervé Télémaque is regarded as one of the most influential representatives of French Pop Art and figurative contemporary art. Hervé Télémaque was born in 1937 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and left his birthplace at age 20 to settle first in the vibrant art metropolis of New York. Here, he studied at the Art Students League until 1960 and came into contact with leading postwar avant-garde tendencies, notably Abstract Expressionism and the American-transformed Surrealism, as seen in Arshile Gorky. After completing his studies in 1961, Hervé Télémaque moved to Paris, where he mingled with the Surrealists and, under the influence of this movement, soon rose to become one of the founders of a new style: “Narrative Figuration” or “figuration narrative,” which has gone down in history as French Pop Art. A key moment marks the year 1964, when American- and British-influenced Pop Art made its first spectacular appearance at the Venice Biennale, which also left the young Hervé Télémaque not unmoved. Together with the artist Bernard Rancillac, who was several years older, and the critic Gérald Gassiot-Talabot, Télémaque then launched a legendary exhibition project: the group show “Mythologies quotidiennes” (Everyday Mythologies). Thirty-four modern artists, working in a new, pop-figurative and often critically charged mode, were gathered here as the germ of French Pop Art, a stylistic era to which, besides Hervé Télémaque himself, artists such as Eduardo Arroyo, Valerio Adami, Gilles Aillaud, Erró, Gérard Fromanger and Peter Stämpfli are credited. Characterizing Hervé Télémaque’s oeuvre of the Pop era was the depiction of everyday objects; genre-specific, he devoted himself, in addition to early collages and assemblages, to painting, graphics, and sculpture in a significant way. Works by the internationally renowned Hervé Télémaque are shown in numerous major museums and collections, including the Arte y Naturaleza Centro De Arte in Madrid, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museu Berardo in Lisbon, and the St. Louis University Museum of Art. Hervé Télémaque passed away in 2022 in France. About the artwork: Roland Garros is the traditional home of the Internationaux de France, the tennis tournament worldwide better known as the French Open. This is one of the official posters that were designed and produced each year for the tennis tournament at Roland Garros.
