Beautiful fossil fish attributed to Lycoptera sp., preserved on a fine-grained sedimentary slab and presented in a protective display frame. Lycoptera was a small freshwater fish characteristic of the famous Jehol Biota of northeastern China, one of the world's most important Early Cretaceous fossil assemblages. Lycoptera fossils are particularly well known from the lacustrine deposits of western Liaoning Province, including the Yixian Formation. This specimen displays a clearly visible articulated skeleton, including the skull, vertebral column, ribs and several well-preserved fins. The warm brown coloration of the fossil contrasts beautifully with the pale sedimentary matrix. The Jehol ecosystem consisted largely of volcanic and freshwater-lake environments and is renowned for the exceptional preservation of vertebrates, plants and other organisms. The reverse of the slab is also shown in the photographs, allowing the condition and natural structure of the matrix to be fully appreciated. Genus: Lycoptera Attribution: Lycoptera sp. Period: Early Cretaceous Age: approximately 120–125 million years Origin: Liaoning Province, northeastern China Formation / fauna: Jehol Biota Material: Fossil fish in sedimentary matrix Dimensions: approx. 9 × 9 cm Weight: 68 g Presentation: Protective display frame An attractive and educational fossil specimen representing one of the most characteristic freshwater fishes of the Early Cretaceous ecosystems of northeastern China.
