Here is a magnificent lot of 3 antique Kokeshi, from the Showa period. The 2 dolls that are resting on their arms are Ojigi, a traditional Japanese art expressing welcome, gratitude and respect. The rounded, clean lines are characteristic of the artist who created these two exceptional pieces: Asahi. Dimensions: H 11 x D 12 cm H 8.5 x D 9 cm The third Kokeshi is a Sosaku, entirely carved and hand-painted by the famous and highly respected female master artisan Aoki Ryoka. Her handwritten signature is present under the base of the doll. Her title is Hinagiku: The Little Chrysanthemum. This rare piece is a superb example of Aoki Ryoka's delicate work. It stands out with an expression of great serenity with poetic closed eyes and finely drawn lashes. The three-dimensional work is remarkable. The natural wood dress features a magnificent chrysanthemum (Kiku) decoration — a flower symbol of Japanese Imperial nobility — hand-painted in red and white, enhanced by subtle and rich touches of gold paint. A small red wooden carved bow crowns her geometric coiffure. Aoki Ryoka has received numerous national honors, including the very prestigious Prime Minister's Prize of Japan, four times.
