Hippopotamus - Fossil bone - Hippopotamus lemerlei (No reserve price)

Collection of 6 Fossil Bones of Extinct Malagasy Hippopotamus – Madagascar An interesting collection of six authentic fossil bones belonging to Madagascar's extinct hippopotamuses, remarkable representatives of the island's prehistoric megafauna. The set includes a substantial limb bone, two curved ribs and three phalanges, offering an attractive variety of skeletal elements and an opportunity to appreciate the anatomy of these ancient herbivorous mammals. The specimens retain their natural fossilized surfaces, displaying warm shades of beige, ochre and earthy brown, with darker mineral staining and well-preserved anatomical details. Natural weathering, irregularities and exposed porous bone structures contribute to their authentic character. Madagascar's extinct hippopotamuses evolved in isolation, developing distinctive characteristics compared with their mainland African relatives. Some populations survived until relatively recent prehistoric times. A fascinating osteological collection, particularly suitable for vertebrate fossil enthusiasts, educational displays and cabinets of curiosities.
