HONG KONG (SAR). Chartered Bank of India, Australia, & China. 5 Dollars

Early 1922 Rice Pounding $5 HONG KONG (SAR). Chartered Bank of India, Australia, & China. 5 Dollars, 1.7.1922. P-41. KNB21. PMG Choice Fine 15. A nice example of the 'Rice Pounding' 5 Dollars note dated 1922. This earlier variety, without 'FIVE' or 'WU' in red, features soft blue and orange colours, with the classical rice-pounding vignette on the left and a sampan on the right. A neat-looking note that has various minor repairs to the border, and which, on superficial inspection, do not extend into the design. Counterfeiting was a major problem, and it was addressed in May 1923 by the addition 'FIVE' in the lower centre underprint, making this the last year of the early type that began in 1911. PMG Comments "Repaired, Annotation."
