The fossil ivory has been polished to a warm cream and honey surface, revealing the laminated dentine and the faint crosshatch of Schreger lines that identify true proboscidean ivory. Mineral staining mottles the length in bands of tan and ochre, a record of the sediments in which the tusk lay. The proximal end preserves the flaking, fibrous texture of the alveolar socket, left unrestored. Tusks such as this are permanently growing upper incisors, used in life for stripping bark, sparring, and sweeping snow from forage. The specimen is presented on an included custom hardwood cradle stand that lifts the arc clear of the surface. Mammoth ivory reaches the market almost entirely from the permafrost of Siberia and Alaska, where seasonal thaw and riverbank erosion release tusks that have lain frozen since the last glaciation. Because Mammuthus primigenius has been extinct for roughly ten thousand years (with a relict population surviving on Wrangel Island until about 1700 BCE), its ivory falls outside CITES and the elephant ivory prohibitions, and it has long served carvers as a legal substitute. The Schreger pattern, the angled intersecting lines visible in cross section, remains the standard forensic test distinguishing mammoth from elephant: mammoth ivory characteristically shows acute angles below roughly ninety degrees, elephant ivory obtuse ones.
