Icon - Wood - Saint Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel on horseback, a representation of the archangel as the head of the heavenly milities. The upper inscription seems to identify him as Saint Michael the Archangel, although wear has made reading it completely difficult. - Saint Michael the Archangel: he appears crowned, with large wings spread and dressed in military-style attire. His dark, frontal face preserves the solemnity typical of Orthodox iconography. - The red horse: the archangel rides a reddish horse, depicted in motion. This color is common in Russian iconography and should not be interpreted necessarily as a literal reference to fire. - The staff or spear: he holds a long instrument that may represent a baton of command or a weapon, symbol of his celestial authority. - The golden background: the gold at the top alludes to the divine sphere and celestial light, while the reddish and brown tones of the landscape create contrast with the figure of the archangel. - The inscription: the Cyrillic letters on the upper border and the abbreviations located in the upper left area are characteristic elements of Orthodox icons. Saint Michael is considered the defender of God’s people and the conqueror of the forces of evil. His equestrian representation underscores his status as the head of the celestial army, protector and spiritual combatant. He should not be automatically confused with Saint George, who also often appears on horseback but usually lances a dragon.
