Kant develops a philosophical doctrine of religion that proposes a religion founded on reason, a variant of natural religion that one may call the “religion of reason.” He presupposes that the idea of freedom, the idea of the immortality of the soul, and the idea of God are unprovable yet indispensable postulates of reason, as he states in the Critique of Practical Reason. He uses the doctrine transmitted by Christianity as a starting point to establish other links between morality and religion: the doctrine of original sin addresses the problem of the human predisposition to good, subject to a propensity to evil; the figure of Christ symbolizes the morally perfect human being; and the idea of the Church is understood as an “ethical community.” This treatise on religion is considered one of Kant’s most famous works.
