DESCRIPTION: I present at auction a MONUMENTAL 2-VOLUME IN-FOLIO EDITION (33 x 24 cm, total weight 6 kg) belonging to a historic, emblematic edition highly sought after of the CORPUS IURIS CIVILIS, the most influential legal work in history and a fundamental pillar of Western law. This monumental compilation was assembled by order of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I "the Great" (527-565) and its first modern scholarly edition was made by Dionysius Gothofredus (D. Godofroy) in Geneva in the year of Our Lord 1583. Our magnificent copy was printed in Leipzig (Germany) in the year of Our Lord 1740 by Johannis Friderici Gleditschii, and is dedicated to the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Charles VI (1685-1740), precisely in the year of his death. An exceptional museum piece that combines history, typographic art and legal knowledge in two large-format volumes bound to endure. CONTENT OF THE WORK: The contents are as follows: + Volume I: Contains the "Institutionum Iuris Libri IV" (Institutions, complete in its 4 books) and the "Digestorum seu Pandectarum Libri L" (The Digest, complete in its 50 books, including the three classical parts: the Old Digest, the Infortiatum, and the New Digest). + Volume II: Contains the "Codex Iustinianus Libri XII" (Code, complete in its 12 books), the "Novellae Constitutiones post Codicem Libri IX" (New Constitutions, complete in 9 books) and the "Iustiniani Imperatoris Edicta", as well as various edicts and valuable minor works in the final pages.
