Impressive Wedding Jewelry From Schaumburg Bückeburg, Dated 1909

Impressive Wedding Jewelry From Schaumburg Bückeburg, Dated 1909

In the 19th century, traditional costume jewellery was one of the most cherished possessions, worn with pride and passed down from generation to generation. In some regions of Germany, elaborate jewellery was part of the typical wedding and holiday costume. Especially the Schaumburg region at the foot of the Weserbergland west of Hanover was known for such jewellery, which can still be precisely located today due to their characteristic design language and peculiar design. An entire jewellery set from Schaumburg, consisting of large earrings, a ring and large shirt clasp, is presented here: It is a typical wedding jewellery of the so-called "Oesterten group" of the Lindhorst costume, which the husband presented to the wife for marriage. The earrings of the set are distinguished not only by their striking size, but also by their long hoops. Both features were necessary in order for the couple to be able to wear the expansive hoods that largely cover the ears and are traditionally part of the Lindhorst festive costume. With the years of development from first simple headdresses to more elaborate hoods, the associated black hoods became increasingly larger and more suslade. This is also how the earrings developed, which were adapted to this format and could then be hooked into the wide band of the hoods instead of into the earlobes. The oversized shirt clasp for the Schaumburg costume, also called breast clasp, is characterized by an octagonal shape and shows characteristic applications of sawn and then gilded silver with pairs of birds with a heart under a crown. Furthermore, we see the monogram of the bride and groom with the year "1909" in which the wedding took place. A matching wide ring with surrounding stone setting completes the well preserved set. All jewellery pieces are made of chased silver and show an elaborate trimming of colourful glass stones and partial gilding. This extraordinary set is the treasured possession of a wealthy family from the Schaumburg region. The pieces came to us from private property in Lower Saxony. Comparative examples can be found in the standard work by Gislind Ritz: Alter bäuerlicher Schmuck, Munich 1978, pp. 73-79.
