Italian school (XVII) - Zwei seltene barocke Emblemata –...

Two Baroque emblem copper engravings – Italy, presumably 17th century – Allegorical depictions Interesting lot of two historical Italian emblem copper engravings, presumably from the 17th century, with allegorical depictions and Latin maxims. The two leaves apparently originate from the same richly illustrated work, whose exact title and author have not yet been identified. 1. EXCISA FŒCUNDIOR – The pruned tree Allegorical depiction of a pruned, yet sprouting tree. The Latin motto “EXCISA FŒCUNDIOR” can be sensibly translated as “Pruned, yet more fruitful.” The motif stands for renewal, resilience, and the ability to gain new strength from loss or deprivation. Historical pagination: 123. 2. PONDERIBUS LIBRATA SUIS – The Globe Allegorical depiction of a globe with the Latin motto “PONDERIBUS LIBRATA SUIS,” roughly “Kept in balance by its own weight.” The representation echoes an antique notion of the world’s balance and combines natural-philosophical symbolism with the Baroque emblem tradition. Historical pagination: 91. Both engravings are part of originally double-sided printed leaves. The reverse sides contain Italian explanations as well as Latin verses and inscriptions. The surviving text includes references to the ancient British queen Boudicca and to historical rulers. This points to a broader allegorical, historical, or representational context. Exact bibliographic assignment remains open. Condition and dimensions The two original leaves were mounted onto larger carrier sheets at a later date. The backs are therefore only partially accessible. Age-related signs of wear and paper changes as shown in the illustrations. • Sheet size each about 21 × 27.7 cm • Overall size including carrier sheet each about 26 × 33 cm • Technique: copper engraving and historic printing on paper • Origin: Italy, presumably 17th century • Content: two separate leaves, offered together Two decorative and iconographically interesting testimonies of Italian emblem art from the Baroque, particularly appealing to collectors of historical prints, allegories, and early modern book illustration.
