An evocative collection of 35 postal covers and cards, mainly dating from 1941–1943, documenting personal correspondence during the Second World War. Much of the correspondence is addressed to members of the Soldati family in the Ponte Chiasso–Chiasso border area, including nearby Vacallo and San Simone. Ponte Chiasso lies on the Italian side of the frontier, immediately adjoining Swiss Chiasso, giving this group a distinctive geographical and postal-history connection. The collection includes handwritten postcards, illustrated cards, postal stationery and envelopes with varied frankings. Numerous examples display violet censorship handstamps, examiner numbers, administrative markings and “VERIFICATO PER CENSURA” resealing strips. A particular highlight is the black-bordered mourning envelope, illustrated separately on both sides: • Sent from Milan to Jean Soldati in Chiasso, Switzerland, with a January 1942 cancellation. • Franked with a single blue 1.25-lire King Victor Emmanuel III stamp from the “Imperiale” definitive series. • Featuring the original black mourning border, continuing across the envelope flaps on the reverse. • Bearing violet censorship markings, the numerical marking “21696” and a substantial “VERIFICATO PER CENSURA” resealing strip. • The reverse identifies the sender as Maria Zuffi, Piazza Castello 22, Milan. This cover combines mourning stationery, international wartime correspondence and visible evidence of postal censorship, making it a compelling focal point within the group. Other appealing features include illustrated views of Milan, Viareggio and Florence, together with personal handwritten messages and repeated family addresses that give the collection a coherent correspondence theme.
