Italy - Sicily / Malta / Gozo

• The island of Sicily is reproduced according to the historic Bourbon-Spanish administrative division into three valleys, clearly legible on the plaque: Val de Mazara (Western Sicily), Val de Demona (North-Eastern Sicily) and Val di Noto (South-Eastern Sicily). • Decorative Apparatus: Large Baroque cartouche positioned at the top in the Tyrrhenian Sea, supported by four winged putti and adorned with crowned royal heraldic emblems. In the lower right there is the monumental cartouche dedicated to the Scala Milliarium (Italian, Germanic and Municipal Miles), flanked by a basket of opulent fruits and by an allegorical figure. A close-up examination of the macro-photographic details (front and back) highlights the following conservation elements and past restorations: • Central Fold: The map presents the classic central editorial fold, originated from its ancient placement inside a bound atlas. The fold shows evident signs of wear, mechanical stress, and yellowing from oxidation, with visible traces of a consolidation and restoration intervention carried out on the verso to compensate for the original weaknesses or small tears of the paper along the folding line. External peripheral edges of the paper appear reconstructed/overhauled (interventions of reintegration of the peripheral paper). The copperplate impression (the imprint left by the metal plate on the sheet during printing) and the original graduated frame survive, but the paper beyond the outer framing lines shows a structural discontinuity due to the leveling of old worn or trimmed margins in the past.
