Refined and unusual historical geographic map of ancient central Italy, titled "2e Partie de L'Italie Ancienne continent. le Latium au temps de Romulus", drawn by the famous geographer Auguste-Henri Dufour (1798–1865) and published in Paris around 1850–1852. The map, marked at the top by the editorial milestone "1re Feuille", offers a splendid and meticulous topographic and hydrographic reconstruction of the central Italian territory during the protohistoric and Roman era, with particular focus on the lands of ancient Lazio (Latium), of the Sabine, and of the Apennine regions up to the coast of the Adriatic Sea (Mer Adriatique). A striking feature in the upper right quadrant is an elegant linear cartouche enclosing the full title, the graphic scales in stadia and Roman miles, and the author's signature "Dressé par A.H. Dufour". The orography of the territory is masterfully described through a dense, plastic fishbone hatch pattern that faithfully renders the course of the mountain ranges and rivers (including the upper reach of the Tiber and the area of Lake Trasimeno). Ut traced clearly on steel, the work combines the rigor of nineteenth-century archaeological research with extraordinary execution elegance.
