Wear and rubbing on the boards and spine, tailcap of volume I partly shaved. Foxing on the title page of volume I, the rest is almost free of foxing. Second edition featuring a portrait of the Duke of Berwick in the frontispiece to volume I; complete in 2 volumes. The Memoirs are preceded by a portrait written by Lord Bolingbroke and by a historical elogium by Montesquieu. Illegitimate son of King James II of Stuart, Berwick was made Marshal of France in 1706. He was the trusted witness to several wars of Louis XIV’s reign, including the War of the Grand Alliance, the War of the Spanish Succession, and the War of the Polish Succession."
