Jan H.B. Koekkoek (1840-1912) - Strandgezicht

This atmospheric seascape by Jan H.B. Koekkoek (1840–1912) shows two horsemen with a third horse at the waterline. The figures are viewed from behind and move through the shallow water toward the sea. On the left a fishing boat lies on the shore, surrounded by a few small figures; further at sea a number of sailing ships appear on the low horizon. Gulls above the beach and along the water enliven the scene. Koekkoek has structured the composition around the broad, lightly cloudy sky, which occupies a large part of the picture plane. The subdued palette of sandy brown, gray-blue and cream is broken by the blue-green and warm-brown clothes of the riders. With loose, confident brushstrokes, the surf, reflections and the shallow water are depicted. Especially around the horses’ hooves, light, curved strokes give a convincing suggestion of movement in the water. The combination of beach activity, shipping and human figures aligns closely with Koekkoek’s well-known maritime oeuvre. Oil on canvas, lower left signed ‘Jan H.B. Koekkoek’. Dimensions of the work approximately 40 × 60 cm; with frame about 63 × 83 cm. Artist biography Johannes Hermanus Barend ‘Jan H.B.’ Koekkoek (Amsterdam 1840–Hilversum 1912) belonged to the third generation of the Dutch painter family Koekkoek. He was a son and pupil of the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. and likewise chose maritime subjects as his main focus. His early sea and river views align with the romantic tradition of his father through their precise painting manner; later he developed a looser brushwork and turned his attention, among other things, to beach scenes, fishermen’s life and landscapes. Koekkoek exhibited from 1859 at the Levende Meesters exhibitions and was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam.
