Jan Sierhuis (1928-2023) - Witte paarden

White horses - Jan Sierhuis A colorful, figurative work After the war, Jan Sierhuis developed into an expressionist painter, influenced among others by Van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso. Together with Appel, Corneille and Lucebert, he found himself at the heart of post-war developments in art. In 1945 Sierhuis was admitted to the evening course at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. In 1947 he was involved with the Experimentalists and in 1948 with the CoBrA group, although he was too young to become an official member. Later, in 1962, he co-founded the Amsterdam artists’ group Groep Scorpio. In the fifties and sixties Sierhuis mainly worked abstractly. Afterwards he returned to the human figure and shifted his focus to figurative themes such as dancing figures, portraits and landscapes. He spent many summers in Spain, where his passion for flamenco exerted a major influence on his work. This dance embodies everything that characterizes his painting: color, emotion, movement and rhythm. In addition, we have our own in-house frame workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary year. Furthermore, we make use of restorers from the trade organization: 'Restauratoren Nederland'.
