Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band', which was released in June 1967 and which won the Grammy Award for Best Album Cover (Graphic Arts). The project was a collaborative one, with Haworth contributing to the overall design, and suggesting the band's name be displayed over the flower bed. Always fascinated by the innovative use of mediums as a response to popular culture, she was also responsible for hand-tinting the life-size colour photos that were assembled, as well as adding the soft sculptures of Shirley Temple and the elderly woman. While this project has come to occupy a huge space in the wider cultural zeitgeist, it is a snapshot from a career that is long and accomplished. As Haworth states: 'I have had so much more joy, fulfilment and well exercised mental muscles with [other projects] than ever I had with the original Sgt P. They strike deeper, mean more and give more – although, to a much smaller audience – than the original "Peppered" experience. I think that there is more heart in them.' (Jann Haworth, quoted in the ACHOF Interview with artist Jann Haworth by Mike Goldstein, 7 December 2020) Haworth comes from a distinguished artistic family. Her mother, Miriam Haworth, was an artist whose works can be seen in major institutions such as the Smithsonian, and her father, Ted, was an Academy Award-winning production designer and art director. Born in Hollywood, she first studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, before moving to the UK in 1962 to study at the Slade School of Fine Art. On graduation, she established herself as one of the first female figures of the British Pop movement, holding an exhibition in 1963 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, followed by shows at Robert Fraser's gallery. She went on to become one of the seven founding members of The Brotherhood of Ruralists in 1975 and founded The Looking Glass School in Wellow, Avon. Haworth is also recognised as an advocate for female representation in the arts; in pieces such as her ongoing mural project 'Work in Progress', she highlights the contributions women have made to the fields of art, science and social reform. Throughout her career, she has continued to push herself in her exploration of medium, pioneering soft sculpture and materials traditionally viewed as craft. In the present works, she explores the bounds of traditional representation, combining painting, sculpture and construction to create works that defy categorisation. , which was released in June 1967 and which won the, for Best Album Cover (Graphic Arts).
