JAPANESE WAKIZASHI SHORT SWORD

Edo period, ca. AD 1603 - 1868 > A Japanese wakizashi in a mounted scabbard, with a cord-bound grip, rounded tsuba and dark decorated saya. Metal fittings articulate the hilt and scabbard mouth. The wakizashi was the shorter sword often paired with a katana in the daisho, a conspicuous emblem of samurai identity. Its hilt, guard and scabbard allowed individual taste and craftsmanship to be expressed alongside the martial function of the blade. > > Size: 550mm x 65mm; Weight: 610g > Provenance: Prince Collection, 1990s2014. > This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. >
