Jean-Pierre Collin (1935-2025) is a French painter of the 20th century who is part of the bohemian history of Place du Tertre in Montmartre. Although his work remained more confidential than that of the great masters of the early century, he fully fits within the tradition of the street and salon artists of Montmartre in the 1960s and 1970s. Unlike the painters of Place du Tertre who confined themselves to purely touristy and figurative reproductions of the Sacré-Cœur, Jean-Pierre Collin stood out with a style influenced by mid-century modern and soft cubism. His works (often done in gouache, pastel or oil) transform urban landscapes and seascapes into a sequence of linear cadences and streamlined geometric shapes. His representations of sailboats or urban silhouettes rely heavily on verticality. While he long sold his works directly to passersby and art lovers of the Parisian hill, his paintings today attract the attention of collectors passionate about 1970s design and graphic art.
