Joan Miró, born in Barcelona in 1893 and died in Palma de Mallorca in 1983, is a monumental Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker and ceramicist, considered one of the greatest representatives of the Surrealist movement. Marked by his native Catalonia and influenced by Fauvism and Cubism, he settled in Paris in the 1920s where he befriended André Breton. Rejecting the constraints of traditional painting, he began a true visual revolution aiming to “kill the conventional painting.” He rapidly developed a unique and deeply personal dreamlike universe, structured by a language of enigmatic and poetic signs: constellations, stars, moons, women, birds and biomorphic shapes float freely across his canvases. His works, characterized by the use of vivid primary colors like blue, red, and yellow applied in flat planes, sometimes recall the spontaneity and purity of children’s drawings while concealing great esoteric depth and a spiritual dimension. Refusing the label of purely abstract painter, he asserts that each symbol derives from his intimate perception of reality, dreams, and the subconscious. Working tirelessly until his last days, Miró diversified his media after World War II by creating monumental sculptures for public spaces, ceramics, and vibrant tapestries. Today, major institutions such as the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona and the Centre Pompidou in Paris celebrate this free spirit who profoundly shaped 20th-century modern art.
