Johann Burgman (Puster Valley, East Tyrol, d. 1825), Saint Joseph with the Infant Christ, painted on layered web silk; the Saint depicted as seated and voluminously draped, with woodworking tools behind him on a stump; winged cherub heads in clouds above; entitled 'S. IOSEPHUS' and signed 'Joann Burgman Fecit' lower right; within a gilt frame; set behind glass and within a tortoiseshell veneered moulding frame; 30.5 x 26cm overall. Note: Web painting (Spinnwebenbilder) is first documented in the 16th century in the Austrian Tyrolean Alps, carried out by monks who produced paintings on canvases made entirely of spiders' webs or caterpillar silk. These miniatures were usually painted for religious institutions and the minor aristocracy but due to their extreme fragility only around 100 are known to still exist. One example thought to be by Burgman, after Cranach and depicting the Virgin Mary, is held at Chester Cathedral.
