Lavater develops in this work his theory of physiognomy, according to which the examination of the features, the proportions and the expression of the face would allow recognizing the dispositions and the character of a person. He notably relates human physiognomies to those of various animals and successively studies the forehead, the eyes, the nose, the mouth, the chin, the profiles and the general shapes of the head.
