Johannes Vorsterman (c.1643-c.1699)

Description: Johannes Vorsterman (c. 1643–c. 1699) Possibly: Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) (circle) Title: Landscape with figures Technique: oil on panel Dimensions: 23 × 32 cm; with frame 32 × 41 cm Signature: remnant of a signature centered at the bottom; on the verso there is an annotation label with an attribution to Johannes Vorsterman Provenance: Dutch art collection Johannes Vorsterman was born around 1643 in Zaltbommel and worked as a landscape painter in the second half of the seventeenth century. He trained in Utrecht with Herman Saftleven and later worked, among others, in England. His oeuvre belongs to Dutch landscape painting of the Baroque. Object description The painting shows a vast, flat landscape under a high, light blue sky. The low horizon opens the picture to a hazy prospect, in which scattered vegetation, small buildings, and a few figures are indicated. On the right stands a group of rural buildings with overhanging, presumably thatched roofs. A slender vertical structure and a tree at the right edge interrupt the predominantly horizontal order. In the foreground there is a group of figures along a country road. A standing man with a staff is placed opposite a seated woman; next to her is a smaller figure. The clothing is depicted with red, ochre, white and dark green accents. Further to the left and in the distance additional figures are added on a smaller scale. The remnant of the signature is located in the middle bottom. Technique and material analysis The scene is executed in oil on a wooden panel. The sky consists of a thin and fairly uniform application of light paint. In the landscape zones the paint is more varied and locally opaque, with short brushstrokes for vegetation, buildings and drapery. The figures are built up with small, concentrated patches of color and linear accents. A fine craquelure covers the entire surface, clearly readable in the light sky. In the foreground and around the buildings the paint texture is more irregular due to the succession of thin and locally more closed passages. Sporadic retouchings are part of the current material condition. Composition and formal analysis The composition is determined by the contrast between the expansive sky and the narrow landscape zone. The horizon is low, giving the work a distinctly horizontal character. The country road and the successive terrain bands lead from the foreground to the distant middle ground. Decreasing scale, blurring of contours and cooler color usage support the spatial effect. The buildings on the right form the main architectural accent and are balanced by the open space on the left. The group of figures lies slightly to the right of center and, through the red and yellow color accents, constitutes the main chromatic focal point. The palette consists mainly of light blue, blue-gray, brown, ochre and subdued greens. The diffuse lighting connects the sky and landscape without strongly defined shadows. Stylistic and art-historical context The work formally aligns with Dutch Baroque landscape painting of the seventeenth century. Characteristic are the low horizon, the dominant sky, the stepped construction of space and the inclusion of small figures within a broadly conceived rural setting. The limited color structure of the distant horizon and the stronger earthy tones in the foreground support atmospheric depth. The architecture and figures function as scale-defining elements within the landscape. Comparable artists Jan van Goyen, Herman Saftleven, Salomon van Ruysdael, Claude Lorrain, Gaspard Dughet Condition The panel is stable. A fine, dense craquelé is present across the paint layer. The color relationships remain legible. The surface has been recently superficially cleaned. Sporadic retouchings are scattered. The verso carries an old annotation label with an attribution to Johannes Vorsterman. Conclusion Landscape with figures can be placed within Dutch painting of the second half of the seventeenth century on the basis of the stated attribution, the Baroque formal design and the landscape composition. The attribution is materially supported by a remnant of a signature and a verso annotation, without these elements alone forming a definitive authorial determination. The panel is stable and shows overall craquelé and sporadic retouchings; the scene and its color structure are preserved.
