John Wesley Jarvis (NY, 1780-1840) Elias Mather, O/B

Property from the Descendants of Harriet Beecher Stowe Description: John Wesley Jarvis (NY, 1780-1840), Elias Mather, Oil on Board, depicting a gentleman in a brown waistcoat and cravat, holding a letter with the artist's signature, in a period giltwood frame. Frame size: 32 3/4 in. x 40 1/4 in. Provenance: Miss Gertrude Robinson Smith, New York, great-granddaughter of the subject (died October 22, 1963); David Beecher Stowe, New Canaan, Connecticut. The painting and its provenance are available in the Frick Research Library. According to the consignor Elias Mather was a wealthy Albany merchant and direct descendent of puritan minister, Richard Mather, who immigrated from Dorchester to Boston in 1635. John Wesley Jarvis was born in South Shield, England, and was a nephew of theologian John Wesley. Between 1800 and 1820, Jarvis was the leading portrait painter in New York City and at the peak of his success, he was commissioned to paint a series of portraits of the leading military heroes from the War of 1812 for New York City Hall. But reckless financial habits and high living destroyed his fortune and his career, and he died penniless after being paralyzed for several years. Measurements: Height: by sight 33 1/4 in. x Width: 26 1/2 in. Condition: Good restored condition, some minor inpainting to the face to the left of the nose, eyebrow, and locks of hair; minor inpainting to the urn on the right side; outlining of the sitter’s jacket, and other minor touch-ups; obscured varnish to the surface, some loss to the paint along the edges from wear within the frame. Notice to bidders: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, or the conditions of aging. PHOTOS MAY ALSO ACT AS A CONDITION REPORT. Please review all photos closely prior to bidding. Complete condition reports are available by request, no later than 24 hours prior to the live auction. All lots are offered and sold 'AS IS', and Everard Auctions will not provide refunds based on condition. Timepiece movements, lighting and electrics have not been tested, and art has not been examined out of the frame unless otherwise stated. We do not guarantee the condition of frames. By placing a bid, either in person, by phone, absentee or via the Internet, you signify that you agree to be bound by the conditions of sale. Everard Auctions does not provide any shipping or packing services. We recommend that all potential buyers obtain pack/ship estimates prior to bidding.
