Rare first edition of the French translation of this major satirical collection of early 18th-century English literature, known by its original title A Tale of a Tub - Behind the appearance of an extravagant and learned narrative, Swift builds a sweeping critique of the intellectual and religious society of his time, mockingly lampooning theological quarrels, philosophical pretensions, the excesses of scholarship, and the intellectual systems that claim to explain the world with absolute certainty - The edition notably centers on the story of three brothers, Pierre, Martin and Jack, whose names symbolize respectively the religious traditions stemming from Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism, and Dissenter Protestantism, and whose adventures serve to allegorically represent the transformations and divisions of Western Christianity - Jonathan Swift - Le Conte du tonneau, contenant tout ce que les arts, & les sciences ont de plus sublime, et de plus mystérieux - 1721 - Tome I et II - Henri Scheurleer - de [8], 2 bl., [16], 300, 2 bl., [12] pp. ; [12], 289, 2 bl., [10] Pages.
