This intriguing composition by José Moreno Carbonero, known as “The Broken Tooth, ” is a magnificent example of the history and genre painting cultivated by one of the great Spanish masters of the late 19th century. The scene depicts the moment immediately following a battle, in which a wounded soldier is tended to by a comrade, while horses, abandoned weapons, and other figures in the background complete a narrative of great dramatic intensity. Far from exalting military heroism, the artist focuses attention on the human aspect of war, employing a balanced composition and an extraordinary mastery of drawing, anatomy, and perspective.
