Josef Albers (Bottrop, March 19, 1888 – Orange, March 25, 1976) was a German artist and teacher, whose work, in both Europe and the United States, formed the basis of a number of the most influential and far-reaching art education programs of the 20th century. The best-known work of Josef Albers is Homage to the Square. This series comprises more than 1,000 works created between 1949 and 1976. Each painting consists of three or four squares that become progressively smaller and fit together. Because there are no lines drawn between the squares, a color interaction occurs, where one color influences the perception of the neighboring color. This optical effect fascinated Josef Albers immensely. He wrote about it: “Each work has a different palette, and is, therefore, from a different climate. The choice of colors and the order is aimed at an interaction; they influence and change each other.” He was related to: Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Walter Gropius, László Moholy-Nagy, Oskar Schlemmer, Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger, Anni Albers, Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Kazimir Malevich, El Lissitzky, Naum Gabo, Antoine Pevsner, Ben Nicholson, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Dan Flavin, Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Georges Seurat, Vincent van Gogh, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe"}
